Bethan Harding is an experienced family law barrister with a particular specialism in complex matrimonial finance and public law children proceedings involving serious allegations of abuse, non-accidental injury and vulnerable parties.

She is regularly instructed in factually and legally complex proceedings requiring detailed analysis of extensive evidence, careful case preparation and effective advocacy. Her practice encompasses multi-day contested hearings, complex expert evidence and cases involving particularly sensitive or challenging circumstances.

Bethan is recognised for her meticulous preparation, incisive advocacy and ability to identify and distil the central issues in complex litigation. She combines a robust approach in court with sound commercial judgment, clear advice and a commitment to achieving practical, proportionate outcomes for her clients.

Matrimonial Finance & Financial Remedies

Bethan has a substantial matrimonial finance practice, representing both applicants and respondents in financial remedy proceedings, including cases involving complex asset structures, significant pension provision and contested financial issues.

Her experience includes:

  • High-value and complex financial remedy proceedings.

  • Cases involving multiple properties, investment assets and business interests.

  • Complex pension arrangements, pension sharing orders and expert pension evidence.

  • Disputed contributions, inherited assets and non-matrimonial property.

  • Cases involving contested valuations, incomplete financial disclosure and allegations of non-disclosure.

  • Third-party interests, intervenors and disputed beneficial ownership.

  • Financial provision following long marriages, with particular emphasis on housing needs, income requirements and fairness.

  • Enforcement and variation of financial orders.

Bethan regularly appears at First Appointments, Financial Dispute Resolution hearings and contested final hearings, including multi-day trials.

Drawing upon her commercial background and experience as an accredited mediator, Bethan adopts a strategic and pragmatic approach to financial litigation. She is a strong advocate of negotiated settlement where appropriate, providing realistic advice on litigation risk and the merits of competing proposals, whilst remaining a confident and effective advocate where contested determination is necessary.

Public Law Children

Bethan has significant experience in complex public law children proceedings, regularly representing parents, children and local authorities in care proceedings and related applications.

A particular focus of her practice is proceedings involving serious non-accidental injury, allegations of sexual abuse and complex factual or medical evidence.

She is experienced in cases requiring the careful consideration of competing expert opinions, extensive medical records, police disclosure and multi-agency evidence, frequently involving contested fact-finding hearings and difficult questions of causation, threshold and future risk.

Her experience encompasses:

  • Serious non-accidental injury, including unexplained fractures and other inflicted injuries.

  • Allegations of sexual abuse and significant physical or emotional harm.

  • Complex medical evidence and disputes involving expert witnesses.

  • Contested threshold criteria and fact-finding hearings.

  • Cases involving parental mental health, substance misuse and domestic abuse.

  • Care and placement proceedings, including contested final hearings.

  • Applications involving the discharge of care orders and challenges to permanence plans.

Bethan is particularly skilled in the forensic analysis of documentary and expert evidence, identifying evidential inconsistencies and presenting complex factual disputes in a clear and structured manner.

She recognises the profound consequences of public law proceedings for children and families and combines rigorous advocacy with a sensitive, measured approach.

Vulnerable Parties, the Official Solicitor & Intermediaries

Bethan has particular experience representing vulnerable parents and other parties whose ability to understand, participate in or give instructions within proceedings may be affected by learning disabilities, cognitive impairment, mental health difficulties or other communication needs.

Her practice includes cases in which a party lacks litigation capacity and the Official Solicitor acts as litigation friend, as well as proceedings requiring specialist participation measures and assistance from communication intermediaries, including Communicourt.

Bethan understands the additional procedural and practical considerations arising in such cases, including the need for appropriate assessments, adaptations to the hearing process and careful management of evidence.

She is experienced in adapting conferences, questioning and advocacy to accommodate individual communication needs, ensuring that vulnerable clients can participate effectively and that their position is properly advanced before the court.

Her approach is patient, clear and sensitive, without compromising the forensic rigour required in contested proceedings.

Private Law Children

Bethan maintains a substantial private law children practice, with particular experience in complex and highly contested proceedings involving serious allegations of domestic abuse, coercive and controlling behaviour, sexual abuse and parental alienation allegations.

She is regularly instructed in multi-day fact-finding and final hearings, including proceedings involving expert assessments, section 37 investigations and complex welfare considerations.

Her work has included cases with international and complex religious elements, including proceedings before the High Court (Mostyn J) in [2023] EWHC 1762 (Fam).

Bethan adopts a child-focused approach to private law disputes, combining detailed forensic preparation with careful consideration of the welfare checklist and the practical implications of proposed arrangements.

Civil Law

Alongside her family practice, Bethan undertakes civil litigation, with a particular interest in drafting, written advocacy and advisory work.

She accepts instructions in a range of civil matters, including personal injury, credit hire and general civil disputes, and has experience of proceedings across the small claims, fast and intermediate tracks.

Her civil practice complements her financial remedies work, particularly in cases involving complex documentation, financial analysis and contested evidence.

Bethan welcomes instructions to prepare pleadings, applications, skeleton arguments and written opinions, providing clear, focused and commercially informed advice.

Professional Approach

Bethan is known for her thorough preparation, attention to detail and confident, persuasive advocacy.

She is particularly well suited to cases involving extensive documentary evidence, complex factual disputes or vulnerable parties, where careful preparation and a clear forensic strategy are essential.

Whether advising in conference, conducting sensitive cross-examination or advancing a client’s position at a contested final hearing, Bethan places considerable importance on clear communication, realistic advice and effective representation.
